I have an e-machine that I reformatted and installed Windows ME on it. Now someone wants to buy it an d I would like to put back the original Windows 98 back on the hard drive. can I do this by formatting the hard drive and then placing the e-machine disc in the CDROM drive etc.

Yes. A lot of these major-manufacturer type machines don't even require you to format first. Some will just let you restore to original state if you insert their CDROM and boot with it, no manual formatting required.
