Demo462 :
I'm currently looking to make a server computer. As I dont have a huge budget nor huge amount of knowledge,I came here. As I was looking on ebay,I saw different names for the same E5-2660 or 2670 cpus. Eg:
Intel Xeon E5-2670 C2 8 x 2.60 GHz Turbo3,30GHz for Desktop Mainboards
or
INTEL XEON SR0H8 E5-2670 2.6GHZ 20MB CACHE CPU FOR HP Z620 Z820 WORKSTATION
Isn't the two cpu's are the same?
Also,Do you know any constant supplier for x79 mobos? Like if I need another server I just buy the same mobo for the exact same price? Preferably under 200$ or atleast not too far from it.
Demo462,
There are three versions of the Xeon E5-2670:
E5-2670 >
LGA2011 > 8-core @ 2.6 / 3.3GHz
E5-2670 v2 >
LGA2011 > 10-core @ 2.5 / 3.3GHz
E5-2670 v3 >
LGA2011-3 > 12-core @ 2.3 / 3.1
There are sketchy description of the upcoming Xeon v4 which are Skylake 14nm, but so far no listing for a v4 version.
If you would like an idea for a quick and inexpensive E5-2670 server:
HP Z420 Workstation 2.60GHz 8 Core E5-2670 8GB RAM No HDD No OS > sold for $309
Dell Precision T3600 2.60GHz 8C Xeon E5-2670 16GB RAM No 3.5" HDD No OS > sold for $414
If you like the E5-2670, you can buy a z620 or z820 and use two of them. There were quite a few of the HP z420 and Dell Precisions T3600's sold with an E5-2670. I have two z420 (4-core and 6-core) and these are ultra-reliable and quiet. To that system you could add RAM, and inexpensive GPU that's good at 2D like a Quadro FX 1800, a RAID controller like an LSI 9240, and whatever storage you need. There are three drive bays and with a bracket can mount another in the spare 5.26" bay. If you buy a RAID controller with an eSATA output, you can run I/O to a little NAS stack.
For server use, if you are thinking of building something more elaborate, I would recommend a dual LGA2011 staying with a workstation board and here is the list from Supermicro:

However, for servers on a budget, you're going to be far better off buying and adapting a used workstation like the HP's or Dell Precision.
