Hi,
Reason to upgrade:
- gaming only

why so many cores (10 minimum):
- a lot DB/OS for learning purpose (work related development)

Is it worth to upgrade my current systems CPU (e5 2697 v3) with something like intel i9 7900x/7920x ?
My current setup
- e5 2697 v3 @ 3750 mhz
- 32 gb(4 sticks) @ 2133 (it's 15cl 3200 mhz memory but will not work at more speed due to processor))
- gtx 980

Soon I will upgrade my gpu to something new (as I moved from 1080p to 1440p) - in plans gtx 1080/ vega 64 (only because of free sync) or new 11XX card.

So does my processor needs to be upgraded due this? Will I see any difference in gaming (note I'm playing high FPS games - mostly FPP)

I have somehow managed to overclock (all core turbo + fsb on 104.5 (within safe range of 5%)) it a bit and it's quite good in general:

a bit worse in thread that AMD Threadripper 1950x that's why I ruled out AMD

- Cinbench R15 - 2443 more than i9 7900x but only 145 for one core
- Passmark - 23419 total / 2257 one core
- 3DMark FirstStrike - 23 105 CPU - more than Threadripper 1920x

- 3DMark TimeSpy ~ 10 733 CPU - better than Threadripper 1920x and Threadripper 1950x a little less than i9 7900x

- CPU-Z - 6885 Multi-Core / 405 Single Core (version >CPU-Z 1.8 )

So as you see multicore performance is there but single core could be better (depending on test it's even behind AMD Threadripper).

In plans would be to overclock new cpu (+dellid) and use the RAM at full speed.

So should I upgrade the platform or it's pointless ?
(cost would be like 400$)

Thanks !

Hi mdd1963,

The 7900X is not worth the $600-700 premium you will pay over the 2700X or the 8700K....

- 2700x simply has not enough cores and I guess it would not be upgrade over my current CPUs one core performance,
- 8700k for sure would be an upgrade in context of one core performance but not enough horses are there (6 cores only vs 14 cores currently)

Still for me the upgrade will cost roughly max 400 $ as I would sell my current setup.

Thx for the input !
