Trying to find a budget upgrade from an e2180 i paid $69 for about 8 months ago. I am looking at the E5200 @$62 as a semi upgrade/I need to free up my E2180 for a secondary gaming rig.

Is the E5200 a decent cpu? It seems to be a loaner as far as the intel numbering scheme. I guess its the last of the "pentium dual core" processor lineup. I think that price I found is hard to beat.

It's fine. You might see something like a 50% speed increase, assuming you didn't OC your e2180. OCing your e2180 to 3GHz instead would probably give you the same speed or more.

for 60 bucks 50% increase sounds good. I need to get a second CPU anyways so instead of spending 40 on a single core 62 for dual core that's significantly faster than my current seems like a good choice to me

Yes I did OC my E2180, but I also intend to OC the E5200.

running my E2180 with stock voltage @ 2.4ghz. Modest OC, but big improvement FPS wise.

I would plan to do a similar OC with the E5200

There have been articles and stories here about people getting high 3's out of the E5200, but I also read recently where someone else had a lot of trouble with theirs and could not get nearly that high. So it depends a little on the luck of the draw but with a good mobo it is likely that you could get a lot of speed out of the E5200.

50% increase? On what data are you basing that?

gh - thanks for the catch! I was thinking about an e2160, which has a 1.8 GHz core. Core speed of the e2180 is 2.0GHz. The e5200 runs at 2.5GHz, so going from the e2180 to the e5200, I'd expect something like a 35% performance increase, given the bigger cache.

I've got my e5200 running at 4.16 GHz under a Coolermaster Hyper TX2. Best prchase I've made in a long time. temps under 40C.

I'm probobly not going to up the vcore to get crazy clock speeds. I like to leave it variable so it saves energy in conjunction with speedstep.

I bought the cpu just waiting for it to get here, btw if your looking for this cpu i got it on amazon from a seller for 61.50 shipped.

Getting the E5200 will increase, having a cooler and your thermal paste to help cool it down is another thing,

Xigmatek s1283 for cooling + retention bracket. +1
pricing not above $50.

unless you have a cooler

the e5200 has such a high multiplier(x12.5) it wont be hard if you have a decent set.

such as good clocking form ram
mobo with stability fsb
yada yada.
