Hi all, 1st poster here 😱

Couple of questions:

I am thinking of either getting C2D E6400 or E6600 but I am not sure which ram speed to get. I am under the impression that it is best to 'match' the FSB (266) to the DDR2 speed 1:1 ie DDR2 533Mhz however I am thinking of overclocking (up) to FSB333, meaning that DDR2 666Mhz would be better, my question is if I do get DDR2 666 Mhz and then _only_ run at 266 FSB what would be the perform loss, and would my MB (pb5 deluxe) auto correct the DDR speed for me?

Cheers for your help

Rob

Hi

Thanks

also ,if i get DDR2 533 Mhz and then oc the FSB to 333 would this mean that my memory is being 'pushed' to far and may get damaged or can i set it to only work at its stated 533, i think this is where the fsb:mem ratios come in

cheers

Just get some 667's. They're cheap now. You can easily turn them down and run FSB 266. Or run them at their stock speed with the processor OC'ed at FSB 333. Or turn everything up even higher...which you should be able to do.

Yes, you could overclock 533 and maybe you get it up to 667 speeds. You won't ruin it unless you do stupid things. If it doesn't work at that speed, turn it back down and you'll be fine.

But, just get some 667's.

If I can jump in,

If I get a e6300 with a fsb of 1033 & ddr2 800, I could either overclock my cpu, turn down my ram or get slower ddr2.

Am I understanding this correctly? or is there a decent reference to basic questions like these?

Look for Wusys guide in one of the OC forums, he extends a lot of knowledge for noobs and "experts" alike.

Basic is 533 is good for basic c2duo cpu and boards, newer boards suport higher mem speeds as "stock" so generally, the higher the better.

Old school was very litttle gain for higher mem, and still fairly true as boards catch up to what the mem is capable of.

Careful of mem voltages, as many boards come stock at 1.8 volts and lots of the higher mem requires ~ 2.0 volts to post or run reliably........

hi
cheers for that. 667 it will be then

I read somewhere that the freq of the memory is determined by the fsb of the processor, could some1 just confirm that if I get 667 with a fsb of 266 that the memory will effective run at no more than 533 (except if ocd)eg:

fsb/mem stock/actual mem speed:
266/533/533
266/667/533
333/533/533
266/400/400

thanks

That is correct. However, if you are planning on OCing your cpu then you'll want to overclock your memory as well. Personally, if you arent going to OC at all then I'd get 533 and if you are going to OC then I'd get 800. 667 is rather pointless IMHO unless if you want to do some mild overclocking and save a few bucks. Just my opinion...

hi

yer i was not going to oc too much, I'm not sure ill need it much higher than 2.4-3ghz over the next 2 years.

However, if you are planning on OCing your cpu then you'll want to overclock your memory as well

you say if i overclock my cpu then i should oc my memory aswell - could i not just get higher rated memory run the mem at stock, but only oc the cpu, or is there an advantage of using oc memory - is it the latency?

cheers

If you plan on eventually hitting 3 GHz you'll need a 333 MHz FSB * 9 multiplier to get 3 GHz. Using the 1066 NB strap with your memory set at 533 it'll be running at 668. So 667 MHz should suffice. If you plan on OC any further you'll want 800 though...

Yer that was my orginal plan, am more likely to upgrade the amount of ram than the speed tho

Except now apparantly there are gonna be price cuts apr 22nd on most c2d so i might just have to wait until then, any1 know about what % this will be on e6600 in uk market?

If its only 10-20% (i cant imagine it being much more) i might not bother waiting.

For Quads i heard you have to wait until Q3 but Im not too bothered about quad yet, sw just be catching up to 2 cores at that point. (yers i no about supreme commander....etc)
