My system is starting to age a bit but, times are hard and cash is tight.
I have a E6600 C2D @2.4 on a GA965 S3 V3.3 board (F8 BIOS) with 4Gb Geil Black Dragon
800 MHz RAM on a 24" 1920x1200 monitor.
It`s mainly used for games when it`s not on the `net or playing movies.
Is it worth my while to pop in a Quad or faster C2D to extend its lifespan?
Would it make more sense to switch to AMD and a PII, bearing in mind, cash
is tight.
P.S. I`m in the UK so please, do n`t quote Newegg or Tigerdirect prices
(for one thing, they make me cry) :(

hmm, how tight is tight for you? cause everything but the monitor and the ram seem good.

Seeing how LGA 775 is basically dead when it comes to making cpu's, would you rather just go for a e8400 and a better mobo? also what is your psu and gpu.

Hiper 670W HPU-4M670 Type R PSU
7800GTX 256 MB (Sob...Sorry HD4870, I miss you so much).
Normally I`d be thinking of a new build about now (it was built over 2 years ago) but other bills need to be paid, you know how it is.
The idea is to do a small upgrade now and build new later on, once Win7 and the DX11 hardware has had the bugs knocked out of them and the prices have become a little more reasonable.
And the 7800 is due for the chop at the end of the month HD4870 1Gb here I come!

Your system has plenty of life left, except for that 7800GTX!. You have plenty of power for 4870 or high end Nvidia. Depends on your budget.

Just get a good heatsink and overclock the e6600. You should get 3.2Ghz pretty easily, and possibly 3.6Ghz+. Add the 4870 and you'll be all set. However, you should consider getting a better quality psu. Hiper is low quality and may die and kill the rest of the system.

Thanks for the input guys, pretty much I was thinking too, although I did n`t think the PSU was too bad but we live and learn.
I`ll keep this, put in the 4870, and rebuild next year when Win7/DX11 has settled down a bit.

Maaaan, you're rig hasn't even hit its prime. OC that E6600 until she pants "Stop"! Seriously, I have my 9-year-old's Xeon 3060 (spelled E6600 by most) OC'd to 3.2 but she's a ho @ 3.4 and will do 3.6 if you touch her right.

Get a contemporary graphics card and enjoy.

agreed!
get a 4870 or 260gtx 216

also with a decent heatsink you should easily be able to get 3.2 out of your processor. i would shoot for 3.5

the combination of the two would yield a night and day difference to what you have now. and be fairly cheap. in the future you could use the graphics card in a new build and crossfire/sli it

Thanks for the ROFLMAO......

And to Fullmetall

What? A 24" LCD is not good enough? Should he have a 30"+ LCD?
And the ram is fine too.

That board officially supports 65nm Quads, with Bios F10 onward. 45nm Quads are unofficially supported with F13 -F14a depending on which 45nm Quad you want.
