So, as you can see I'm running on a pretty old rig. I was wondering if I could overclock my CPU a little bit since I have problems running couple of games. As the tittle says I have a E7500 on a G31M-GS / G31M-S R2.0. I tried this once but after I had played a game for half an hour it went to BSOD and I didn't really check out if it was because of the overclock. Temps don't go higher than 48 deegres Celsius under load. So am I safe overclocking? Thanks for your help!

Specs:

Smilodon Raidmax with 500W PSU (This is what I'm worried about since I already upgraded my GPU)
G31M-GS / G31M-S R2.0
Intel Core 2 Duo E7500
4GB DDR2 RAM
AMD Radeon Sapphire R7 260X 2GB GDDR5 OC edititon

Pony32,

Pony32,

I made a search on Passmark Performance Test baseilines: "CPU: E7500 / Date and sorting: Sort by CPU descending" which returned 1774 results.

The highest 4 CPU scores were using various versions of ASUS P5Q motherboard

Score___ GHz

3218 ___ 4.4
3189 ___ 4.3
2995 ___ 4.0
2994 ___ 4.0

Filtering by adding "Motherboard: G31M" returned 102 results.

The Top 10 CPU scores:

Score___ GHz

2944 ___ 3.9
2943 ___ 4.0
2877 ___ 3.9
2696 ___ 3.9
2688 ___ 3.7
2651 ___ 4.0
2598 ___ 3.6
2498 ___ 3,3
2472 ___ 3.3
2317 ___ 3.8

The highest score at stock speed (2.93 Ghz) is 2232 and the lowest at 1213.

All but one of these scores was using the G31M-ES2L version

Of course, the CPU score varies according GPU, RAM, and drives.

So, it appears that a stable overclock on the Gigabyte G31M to 3.9 GHz can produce an improvement of +31% of the best at stock 2.93GHz and that top G31M score is 91% (-9%) of the best score for the E7500 .

It appears to be worth trying the overclock to 3.9GHz and if it's not stable, dial it back incrementally. There are overclocking forums on which you might find out the multiplier /voltages to use.

However, in my view it would be wiser to change CPU's as the G31M can accommodate quite a few much faster processors:

Score___ CPU _______GHz

5837 ___ Xeon X5460 ___ 3.8 (O/C from 3.16)
5724 ___ Xeon E5440 ___ 3.8 (O/C from 2,83)
5513 ___ Xeon E5540 ___ 3.6 (O/C from 2,83)
5382 ___ Xeon X5460 ___ 3.6 (O/C from 3.16)

Of course, these scores are in consideration of there being twice as many cores. Take into account: the stock, single-threaded performance:

E7500 is 1082
X5460 = 1344
E5440 = 1208

And, in overall the top X5460 = 198% of the top E7500 /G31M score. And this is not an expensive option. See for example:

Intel Xeon X5460 Quad Core SLANP 3.16GHz 12M 1333 CPU > sold for $13.40

I Intel Xeon E5440 Server CPU 2.83GHz 12MB Cache Quad Core SLANS > sold for $7.80 + $5.99 shipping

In summary, you can double the overall CPU performance and improve single-threaded performance +30% for $14.
