Just got an E8200 for $90 on ebay, was wondering after an oc to 3+ghz how much gaming life do you think it has before it's too crappy to play modern games?

Thats nice to hear, I was bidding on an E7200, it started at $30 bucks but soon went to freakin $90 bucks and thats when I found my E8200 buy it now for $90 bucks and I was sold.

Twice the cache for the same price and higher fsb to boot :)

How does the E8XXX series compare to the Core I5, or even I3?

i5 quads demolish the E8x00 series. An i5 quad is better than a Core2Quad Q9550 @ 2.8GHz.

i3s probably will be slightly faster than Core2Duos clock-for-clock, and they are also beastly at OCing.

The E8x00 is very respectable though, and you can overclock to 4.0GHz with good aircooling.

The core i3 demolishes the core 2 duo in everything it can over clock to 4.5 ghz on air and has hyper threading as well, the benchmarks on here show it, they are not even remotely close however for the price that you paid that chip is definitely a steal

most games are GPU dependent, rather than CPU. so as long as yuou have a decent graphics card, it will be a while before you need to upgrade that CPU.

as many have suggested, get a decent aftermarket cooler and OC the pants of it. (figuritively speaking)

I dunno about demolishes, going by this link the I3 is better in most things but the E8400 wins a few tests also.

Yeah, while thats true that the i3 wins in a lot of test, the OP already has the c2d cpu. The gain will be minor if he went after the i3 from his core 2.
