Hey everyone,

My e8400 has been overclock to 3.6ghz for about 6 months now, running flawlessly. Ok we all know that 3.6 is a very easy O/C for that processor, but with my XPS 630i ( nForce 650i) i really can't go over 400 FSB. Anyways, here is the question, i'm stock at 1.35 Vcore (1.312 read in CPU-Z). That is very high when you know that penryn o/c at 3.6 at stock Vcore normally. (1.20 or something similar).

Do i have a bad chip? I know it's a C0 stepping but even then i should be able to run the Vcore way lower than that.

Any advice or helpful comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Have you tried upping your northbridge instead of your vcore, otherwise you might just be really unlucky. (like REALLY unlucky)

Before bumping up vcore, try upping the northbridge (as priv said). If that doesn't fix your problem, put your northbridge voltage back to where it was and gradually increase vcore.

Here's my setup just for reference; My E8400 is at 4.0ghz with a bios voltage of 1.3825. In CPU-Z my idle vcore is 1.344 and at full load, 1.312.

All chips are different though

Try upping NB, and FSB like said by previous poster. Also check if ram is crashing out on you. Even the C0 stepping should be able to do 3.6 at stock voltage. My E8400 is at 4 with stock running fine so you should be able to do 3.6 easily unless you got a really bad chip.

Upping the NB doesn't seem to do anything good. RAM is fine. at 1.20 i VCore i post but i dont make it to windows. At 1.25 i boot to windows but my CPU automaticly set it back to 1.35...

Really i think it's all a Motherboard problem. I'm thinking about the 780i chipset since i run in SLI and i dont want the 790i because of the expansive DDR3

Can you tell me what stepping your E8400 has? It is possible if you have the old C0 stepping to require such high voltages to maintain 3.6ghz

I've had a C0 stepping E8500 and Ocing to 3.8 required 1.36v so really it's not that big of a surprise. The C0 stepping is horrible imho.

VID means the amount of voltage required in order for your CPU to even boot. Of course, lower means better. But I wouldn't worry too much about VID because most E8X00 have a standard VID. I've compared my old E8500 with the others who have the same VID and well some got luckier and their C0 stepping OCed a bit better but honestly they're pretty much the same.

My advice is get an E0 stepping or just invest a lot in cooling.

Bah seriously i wont invest 300$ to get E0. My cpu is still running in acceptable Volts that wont damage it. I could get the voltage down a bit if only Dell didn't put Voltages bump of .5 !! Bloody idiots.

Anyways, as long as i run my Vcore under 1.45 i will be ok for years. The fan from the XPS 630 is pretty amazing too. I never have high temps, so that's a plus.

well as long as your cooler can handle it then it's fine because I have an aftermarket CoolMaster HyperTX2 HSF and even with that temps went up to 80 (@Tjmax 100) during OCCT tests and orthos. My jaws dropped and I quickly sold my E8500 and bought E8400.

The E8400 right now is about 209 canadian dollars plus tax so it's not 300 as you've described and it will OC to 4.0 ghz no problem.

I've decided to trade the processor over cooling solution because it's better in a long run. My E8400 now running 4.0ghz at 1.28v according to CPU-Z and set to 1.29 according to mobo and it's running stable plus 15 degrees less than E8500 C0.

Ok i get the point but as i said in an earlier post. My chipset is 650i, so FSB 400 is already amazing for that chipset and it wont go any further. Plus i don't have any kind of Temps problem. My peak temp in Prime 95 was about 45 C.
