Fixed one problem and found another.

My E8400 seems to be running hot. My bios says it is running at 56C idle.
Everest Ultimate readings (these also are the same in speedfan):

CPU: 51C
Core1: 40
Core2: 40
GPU: 67
CPU core: 1.20v

Mobo: Asus P5N-D with newest Bios
GPU: 8800gts 512

I have not overclocked at all. My heatsink is a Arctic Cooler 7 and I just used the paste that came on the heatsink.

As of right now my only ideas are to go to radio shack and pick up some arctic silver 5 and replace the stuff that came with the heatsink. What do yall think?

Indeed, thermal paste is a pain in the butt to get on correctly if you haven't done it many times. There's a few ways of doing it correctly, but a dozen ways of doing it wrong.

Bigger is NOT better, the stuff that comes with the AC7 is good enough, so you probably put too much and creating more a problem then a solution to cooling your CPU.

If you don't have any paste left, yeah, might as well buy the good stuff, but if you have some left, clean it all up and try pasting it again & reseat.

My e8400 is OC'ed to 3.6 and it idles at 25-26 right now, in my basement, and it's pretty darn cool during winter. In summer it idles around 28-29.

Mine too I've just ordered an Arctic Pro 7 as my E8400 is running 45 degrees according to bios and 44 degrees core with Real Temp at idle. I ran Intel Burn Test 1.6 for 10 minutes and core temperature peaked at 80 degrees C. Reading the AC Pro 7 page says the heatsink compound goes hard after a week that is pre applied so you might have trouble cleaning it off and replacing. - Tim

You should of gone for a Zalman or a Xigmatek they are great brands & more future proof. And just remember the rule of the thumb is only apply thermal paste about the same size as a pea & spread it out as evenly and thinly as possible :)

lol... yea right. maybe with 'real temp' it runs 50c load. LOL. my E8500 overclocked to 3.8 with zalman (better heatsink) with 65 (cold) ambience runs at 53C under load. dont tell me ur E8400 running at 4 gighz with a mediocre heatsink runs 47-50 under load. shenanigans!
