Question E8400 in retro build...won't overclock

Hi all. Got this retro build for some old games I picked up at a charity sale. Changed cpu 3.00ghz clock speed in bios to 3.1 to test. Pc does not post on first attempt then after 2nd time does boot into Windows but clock setting is ignored. Any ideas? No other settings changed. Would have thought vcore or anything else would be ok on default settings to achieve 3.1. Temps, benchmarking, ram, gpu....all good.

To get to 3.1GHz, you had to increase the FSB, right?
Increasing the FSB also increases the RAM speed. It might be that your RAM is not capable of running faster than what it is rated for.
Try toning down the RAM speed.

That's right mate. Just increased fsb. Read somewhere for a small o/c just that needed. Will check ram speed though. Rated for 800htz.

My (and most) E8400's run/ran at 3.6GHz on a 400MHz FSB no problem.

Reduced ram speed without success. Really bugging me now! Will try again at weekend and report back. I know the cpu is old but it's all my retro gaming pc needs.

What make/model is your mobo?

What does the RAM sticks or CPUz say your RAM speed is?

Then if you set FSB to 400MHz, make sure the FSB:RAM ratio is set to 1:1 (the mobo should tell you what the expected RAM speed will be)
