2 questions.

1. my E8400 is running on some kinda of power saving protocol which brings the speed to 2 GHz when ideling.
how do make it run at 3 GHz at all time? something in bios?

2. i plan to follow the overclocking guide for E8400, how hot is too hot?

right now i think it idels at 50-52 deg.... kinda hot already. I just have the original fan that came with my new E8400

Its called SpeedStep, it makes the CPU run at lower speeds when idling to save power and energy. You can disable it in the BIOS, EIST or C1E? Sorry cannot remember correctly :lol:

okay thanks, now what a bout if i was to over clock this ? i assume 50deg ideling is too hot? what is the ceiling? 60?

what all you expert would recomend a FAN that is not an over kill but enough to get me to 4 Ghz?
brand? price? model# ? i am

45 nm Core2's have a heatsink about half the size of the one's that came with the 65 nm Core2's. They have just about enough cooling capacity for the chip to run at the rated speed.

A 4GHz OC on an E8400 will take serious cooling. Xigmatek HDT S-1283V (about $40) are very popular.

50 C idle temps is too hot. I have the thermal warning in my motherboards set to 70 C.

already got the safe bet with Arctic freezer pro 7. its not the the most extreme. but it is so far the MOST widely reviewed and tried and true.
