E8600 Idle and Load Temps.

Hey everyone, I've been looking into possibly OCing my E8600, however I'm not sure if my current temps are really safe to do so.

When I boot up Windows and run CoreTemp, my CPU idles at 37-38C. I then downloaded Prime95 and ran that for a few minutes and it got up to 70C. That seems very high to have your CPU running at that temp for an extended period of time, but again I don't know that much at the moment about overclocking as I'm still researching it. I'm assuming I would need to buy a third party CPU cooler in order to have a stable OC.

The 37-38C idle and 70C load temp are with completely stock settings and heatsink/fan. The case I'm using is a Thermaltake V9 VJ4000 is that makes much of a difference. Any insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Up to 70 C only after a few minutes seems unusual. When I had my stock cooler on my e8400, it would take over 10 minutes to approach 70 and the highest was 68 or 69 because the CPU fan ramped up.

How much or how little thermal paste did you apply? Disable any CPU fan profile in your motherboard BIOS. Leave the side panel out and if it stays cooler on Prime 95, then you know your case airflow needs improvement. If the temps stay the same, then you need Artic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 which is what I use.

I wasn't the one who installed it, I got the PC made from a respectable local PC shop.
And yeah I figured it was odd that it ramped up to such a high temp so quickly. Thanks for the suggestions. And how do I have disable a fan profile in my BIOS? I've looked through it but wouldn't know which option to disable.

Intresting you can probably oc it my friend has a E8400 with a zalman 9700 on it he says it idles around 33c but only goes up to about 38c under load for 12 hours but last time i was at his house his computer sounds like a wind turbine under load.

High temps will dmg a cpu but it's a varying temp that ruins stability easier such as high highs and low lows can also ruin a cpu by going for low temp to high and then back down over and over. Water cooling isn't necessarily best for keeping things cold but best for keeping things at a constant temperature.

70c isn't that bad you can probably do a mild oc. Just make sure the temp doesn't rise much more after 70 and it be fine.

I guess it's not that a temperature of 70c is worrying me, it's more the fact that it got up that high from 38 in just a minute or two using Prime95. And from what I've been reading, it seems unusual for a CPU to jump up by 32C under load.

I've been mostly reading that people with E8600s that they only go up to high 50s, low 60s under heavy load, and most of those are OCed.
