I currently have 100+ SAS hard drives that I need to format and do a surface test on. My problem is I can not figure out an easy way to do it. I have build a small hard drive formatter that I plug in SATA or IDE drives and I run DBAN. When I do this with the SAS cards I have I run into the problem of I have to set each drive into its own raid and it one fails I can't tell which one it is. I would like to just plug them in and run DBAN.

Anyone have any suggestions? I am not looking at spending much money too.

You're never going to find a way to set up SAS drives without some config, it's a part of their charm as being SCSI based (Serial Attached SCSI).

You used to be able to get a cheap duplicator that'd erase drives for a few hundred bucks, but I'm not seeing any under $1000 anymore, a thing of the past.

Sounds like you're in for some good old fashioned manual labor :/. To save you some time finding the failed drives, just label the cables so all it takes is a quick glance at the RAID software to know which one dropped. Or if your using an actual server chassis, just use the identifier light.
