ECC RAM on an i5-6500?

Basically I've found a deal on second hand ram for €50 (16GB) but I'm fairly certain it isn't compatible with my CPU.

I've looked around and found that the i5 doesn't support it but the guy selling it is telling me that that only means the ECC won't work.

Just looking for help here as it would be a great way to save money.

Not sure, I'm planning on getting a H110 Gigabyte but wouldn't mind spending an extra €20 on a compatible one.

I think I only see some B150 support ECC ram but (operate in non-ECC mode)

This is what I found under the specs of my one,
"4. Support for ECC UDIMM 1Rx8/2Rx8 memory modules (operate in non-ECC mode)"

So it looks like it is compatible with the mobo but I've read that i5s don't boot with the server RAM is that true or...?

Yes, you can look it up on intel website, only a few support ECC ram.

Any point in getting another mobo or should I get a regular 1Gb stick?

Sorry, I meant 8Gb, I can't fit 16Gb into my budget without this deal.

I was going to get 1 stick of 8GB for the possibility of an upgrade in the future. Is 2x4Gb better?
Motherboard is dual channel.

Buy and use from 1 set if possible, mixing ram even with same exact model some don't work.
