Hi,

I've been woundering a long time about ECC for memory. What does it do? I know very little, that it means Error Correction Code i think. And also that for every pack of data passing through, there's a control bit that says if the checksum was the same before entering as when leaving.

It sounds like a really good idea really, and to my knowledge it doesen't slow the memory down very much. Or all.

So my questions:
-What's the difference
-Why ECC or not ECC
-Does it do any difference in a normal computer

Could anyone post some links to guides or similar? I feel that I know pretty much about Cpu and gpu and such, but when it comes to memory, what's TRAS eg? I don't know what it really means.

Thanks

I not sure though on your actual question as to having an answer. Try posting in the Memory forum section 😀

it is slower, and only for high end workstations/servers.

ECC checks errors and doing so slows down the ram. Good for servers and high security systems.

High performance and gaming ram are non-ecc for speed and overclockability and rely on it's memory controller for detecting errors.

ECC RAMs checks on every other clock cycle and therefore slows down memory by 20% in some memory benchmarks... If you plan to run a rock stable server or have an insanely large amount of RAMs (4GB and above), it's a good choice. To Normal users, even gamers, there isn't a need for ECC RAMs...
