First off, I know this is a single channel board and not the best - but it was free with the P4 3.0Ghz 800Mhz FSB so it gets my test server up and running. My question is - can anyone here comment on the actual or perceived performance of the CD and hard drives? The install of Win XP seemed to take a lot longer than on any of my older, slower computers. Maybe a byproduct of the chipset? or am I expecting too much from the speed increase when it comes to peripheral access? CD is a 24X Yamaha and HD is Maxtor 160GB Diamond Max 9 series ATA.

I have one of those boards (for free) too and I haven't noticed any particular lag in the disk access. I ran Sandra and the disk bench is about where it's supposed to be... Not sure why you're seeing that.

I believe the 848 is really just the 865 with single channel memory, so it should do about the same on disk performance I think...

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I have a bad board. MBM 5 also shows my case temp at 165F in an Antec SLK 3700BQE but I'm looking into that. Do you remember your disk bench scores? In the latest version of Sandra 2004.8.9.131, it was 47 MB/s.

I've got Sandra 2003.1.9.26 and the bench is 27042 with an 80 Gig Western Digital 7200 RPM 8 meg cache drive. Should be about 29k on that reading... but not too bad. My score breakdown was Buffered Read at 87 MB/sec and Buffered Write at 74 MB/sec.

Are you using a PATA or SATA hard drive? If it is PATA make sure you have DMA enabled.

PATA and DMA Ultra Mode 5, so no problems there. I did look in more detail at the buffered read and write and they are still off by a considerable margin from the above numbers - 45 buffered read and 65 buffered write. Should the different benchmarks make that kind of difference? or am I still not getting what I should?

Actually, the version of Sandra makes a big difference. I downloaded Sandra 2004.8.9.131 and just re-ran my disk benchmark and it came out overall 38 MB/sec. Buffered read 59 MB/sec and Buffered write 74 MB/sec.
