Miles and miles into the game and i get a nice little crash that goes to
desktop.

Luckily (or so i thought), I quicksaved about 3 seconds before.

Unluckily, when i reloaded the save, 2 things happened.

1) my map is disfigured (the bottom half is about an inch to the right).
2) my journal topics have disappeared (quests are still there).

On debating going back to a previous save (a looooong ways back) i decided
to start again.

On starting again, and looking at the map, i see the map is still screwed.

Must admit I forgot to check the journal to see if that was fixed.

Any idea how to fix this? Or is it a case of re-bloody-install?

Was like my 3rd character, on about level 72 before it crashed too 😱(

It does sound like the game itself has become corrupted, and not your save
file. You should be able to archive your saved game files, reinstall the
game, and then copy the save files (which have an .ess extension) back into
the saves folder. Your last quicksave *should* work, and you'll be back on
track.

If you accepted the defaults when you installed, the saved game files will
be in:

C:\Program files\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\Saves
