So - I tried to install Ubuntu, and screwed up. I installed it on my D: drive; Ubuntu wanted to install GRUB on it. It failed to install GRUB, so I assumed everything was done with and I restarted the computer, planning to install it later. I assumed wrong.
On the next restart, I got the 'blinking underscore on a black screen of death' and had to use a Windows recovery USB. Windows was seemingly mixed up: according to wmic, the C: drive contained the files of my previous D: drive and the F: drive contained the files of my C: drive. After some research, I decided to use the bootrec /fixmbr command and the bootrec /rebuildbcd command to get Windows back into shape.
This mostly worked - Windows booted once again, although the regular Windows 10 logo did not appear and instead the 'spinning circle' animation displayed over the BIOS splash. After looking through my C: and D: drive to see what had changed, I noticed the EFI folder was on my D: drive rather than my C: drive.
Of course, I haven't realized until now I could have simply tried to reinstall GRUB on the drive and it would have likely handled everything fine. So is it too late to do this? Should I backup and do a fresh install of Windows? What's the best option here?
Thanks in advance.
