eGPU vs desktop-any difference?

apparently been seeing videos about people 'supercharging' their laptops with desktop gpus via an external adapter.
so....how much difference in performance are we looking at when we compare it to a desktop of equal config. also , is it better to just get a non gpu laptop and then get a desktop gpu and hook it up ? or will it have issues ?

1. It is expensive
2. Your laptop needs the right port
3. Unless you have a killer CPU in the laptop, that will be one of the choke points

suppose we have already a card and psu and a laptop with a good enuf cpu . then ?
