I'm sure they'll figure something out. At least it sounds as if they are being proactive about it. Besides Diablo 3 had duping right up until the auction house closed.

Blizzard practically endorsed it and essentially all, but told players how to easily dupe 10 marquis gems over and over any time their value met a certain AH value break even point threshold.

When you sign up for the game, you agree to follow their terms of service. Cheating doesn't even need to be in fine print. People are morons and they want to ruin the game so they can get some virtual coins short term. Stop taking away all blame from the people who actually abused the glitch.

Terms of Service agreement gives them good excuse to boot them out of the game if they are caught cheating. In-game dupe bug issue been around MMORPG forever. I remember we had a big problem with items in Asheron's Call years ago. One time they actually had to roll back all the servers before the patch was applied so we lost a day or two worth of XPs because some players found a way to cheat and was bad enough that everything had to be rolled back. I was not happy to complete a hard quest only to lose my quest item.

All I have to say about this is.... I told you so. This game is doomed. Many of my friends have laughed at me for even giving it a try. I haven't opened ESO since the second day of owning it once I realized I didn't like it. All the bots in the chat, all the annoying messages from bots, I couldn't enjoy the game if I wanted to. There was no way around it. Making money was already close to impossible an to find out that people already have billions an legend armour.... wow I can't say how happy I am that I canceled my sub an don't plan on ever giving it another go.

I'm happy I didn't buy the game. A completely off balance economic is one big reason why MMO is not fun to play despite being anything good. Whatever they do, the damage has been done, intentionally or not. Anyway, this bug exist from launch and not because a player made them, so I think it is not cheating. Clearly the devs fault, people just exploiting your mistake, so rather than banning and make them lose their money for the game and the initial subs free, you should just lump em together in different server or something and let them play for what they have paid; or just reset their account. Most people, if presented with shortcuts to get anything the easy way, will probably exploit it and do it anyway, be honest.

Honestly I probably would have done this dupe had I enjoyed the game in the first place. Though since it was already trash before this I'm glad this dupe happened. Just to strengthen my opinion on the game an to keep me from even thinking about giving it another try. As Ferooxidan said an MMO's strong point is the economy. A lot of players play for prestige (most money, best armour) its part of the drive that keeps them playing. Once that is ruined you can just kiss the game good bye or be prepared for changes that you probably won't like.... as in being banned or having accounts reset.

Edit: And just to think.... this game is based around PVP lmao now what you going to do with a bunch of dupers running around with infinite health potions an legendary armour just smacking you around like a rag doll? well I'd quit if I were you. Tell them to make the games they were famed for..... single player rpg's jumping on the MMO bandwagon was a huge mistake as it's already a dying genre unless its Free 2 play from the get go an even than 99% of them struggle to stay afloat financially.

Hmm...

We often hear economists on news programmes talk about the supposed
natural long term balancing effects of, "market forces". I think it would be
an interesting experiment if all those who have been cheating in this way
were simply moved into an entirely separate but otherwise identical MMO
where the bug is left in place, see what happens, see how that realm's economy
and structures evolve. Probably not feasible as it'd require twice the no. of servers,
etc., but it just intrigues me from the point of view of the way in which companies
create these virtual environments with a set of rules that are intended to control
the game world in various ways.

Sometimes the most interesting events in a game can come from aspects of
how the game can be played which were never intended by the game designers.

An example in the sporting world would be an alternative olympics in
which athletes could do whatever the hell they liked wrt body enhancement,
drugs, etc. The standard Olympics is of course supposed to be drug-free,
which really is a bit weird because normal people in everyday life typically
consume all sorts of daily additives, even if it's just vitamin pills. Which do
you think would be more popular over time? The normal Olympics? Or the
alternative in which someone can run the 100m in 5 seconds? I'm betting
the latter for sure. I'd be like seeing comic book heroes for real.

Anyway, just a thought. Don't ban the people who are cheating in ESO. Move
them into an identical but separate version where such behaviour is A-ok, let
that realm evolve in its own way, like an ESO version of Escape From New York.
That way, the players involved keep paying their fees to play the game, they get to
play the way they want, while those who want the normal rules can continue in the
standard realm. The time currently being spent by staff trying to identify offenders
could instead be used to run the other realm.

These are 2 completely separate issues. regardless of when ZOS first knew about this issue, anyone who signed the TOS knew they were exploiting. The fact that they chose to spend money on the game and CONTINUE to exploit believing ZOS wouldn't ban them if they hadn't already is utter stupidity and hubris.

The fact that they can't discontinue their subscription is a separate issue with the website not being properly developed to provide limited access.
The web side is a separate development track that looks like it was incomplete. ZOS doesn't have any excuse for not completing web development for these situations but you can't conflate that with the ban not being legitimate. 2 wrongs...and such.

ZOS doesn't really need to do much more than ban the offending players because whatever legendary gear they have for the top level now will be obsolete soon. The content patch in a couple of weeks raises the level cap a couple of levels to VR12.
Legendary VR10 stuff that people have now will be obsolete in 2-3 content patches when the blue stuff you get from new content is better than the legendary stuff players have now. the REAL problem is players who didn't make legendary gear and are hoarding the upgrade materials they got from exploiters on the cheap. However, that's not really much of a problem either because they will eventually get destroyed through use too. those players who didn't exploit but bought cheap mats will have made a small profit in the long term but nothing gamebreaking.

That's really irresponsible if it was known in beta. The whole point is to catch bugs and fix them before release. Banning is rather stupid. They lose a paying player, and maybe their friends, because of some stupid programmers error. An account wipe is punishment enough.

If they can't even cancel their accounts due to yet another bug in the website, you can bet those people will be getting all of their money back, and ZOS will be paying charge back fees on top.

I played over 50 hours in the various stages of the beta. I loved the game. But I told myself I refuse to buy it until atleast 3 months after the game comes out because I know there will be game breaking, or bugs that would just make me hate the game at the beginning so I would wait till a few patches came out. The other reason im pretty sure this game will be F2P by the fourth month lol.

I think the game still has plenty of potential but ill wait till three months have passed and hopefully some things will be different.

I have to agree here. Banning someone for using something, even a 'bug' in a game, is stupid and is the reason why the BEST games like TERA Online have it set up so that your BEST equipment are gotten through quests, not through buying them.

Elder Scrolls Online as with any MMO requiring a subscription free should never ban a user. That's another $15/month they are going to need when they realize their game is a failure. Bethesda please do yourself a favor..... announce Fallout 4 to recoup your reputation that just got shot to hell from this garbage game you just released.

Don't they use server-side checks? I know if I was designing an MMO and wanted to prevent cheating, I would do server-side sanity checks: let the game client optimize transactions but have the servers verify individual transaction elements as they apply it. The way the interim fix is described, it looks like servers blindly trust clients and this lets UI bugs and lag turn into exploitable things.
