I have Windows98se. When I press Ctrl+Alt+Del I see many programs running in the background. Does anyone know which ones I can safely close while I'm gaming? My pc is not on a network but I do game online. Thanks in advance...

There is no try. Only do, or do not...

Trial and error is going to be the best method since we don't know the stuff loaded on your box. Do the Ctrl-Alt-Del thing one-at-a-time while testing the games until you no what is what. One thing not to do is end task on "Explorer" or "Tray", the rest is reasonable safe to end task. Don't worry because as soon as you reboot they will all startup again anyway.

So learn what each one is first then use MSCONFIG to selectively take them out of the startup. Or if you really want to know what they are you can do a search in windows explorer to find them.

Specifically, Explorer and Systray are the two that you shouldn't close.

you can stop these loading each time you load up your computer by going - start, run typing MSCONFIG going to the startup tab and removing all the ticks from the progs except systray and scanreg - if you have any background progs which say autorun when your scanner is open or system monitors these will no longer run.

If it ain't broke don't fix it

I don't what programs you have running but some might see like rnaapp (modem) shows up when you dial up using 56k. You might see hidserv which deals with stuff hooked through your usb bus (deals with mice, keyboards, etc.) there's one called msgloop that shows up on some systems (think this deals with audio) systray and explorer are a must though
