I am wanting to eliminate the monthly equipment charge for internet that ATT charges. Can I buy my own modem router, disconnect the ATT one, plug mine in and call uverse give them the numbers on the my new equipment and be up and running. I did this with the other local cable internet company and it worked fine. I am reading all these articles of how to buy your own & hook it up to uverse router...just don't understand why I cannot eliminate att equipment all together and save the monthly charge....

Solution
Probably. Generally, though, you should look at the ATT support info, and see exactly what modem/router they support. Buy one of those.
Many others may work, but if you ever have to call them for support, you might be out of luck.

What is on their list?

This all depends on ATT, some providers allow you to buy your own equipment, others dont.

They likely have information on their support page, as well as equipment they will allow you to use, or contact their support line.

Thank you all for your responses, i went to support page & they have nothing listed but have it as "not recommended". I need to switch providers, i am cutting uverse service but keep internet. However since they make me rent or buy theirs with a max of 45mbps upload & their competitor here Cox Communication allows you to buy your own compatible equipment with 150 mbps download for 79.99 one year ....i will switch to them...thanks again
