Hey everyone,
I'm considering a Triple monitor surround setup for games like Elite dangerous, do you think my GTX 970 g1 gaming will be able to drive that at 60 frames? I don't need the highest settings, but medium would be nice.

Solution
I wouldn't go with 2 screens with Elite Dangerous. It just simply doesn't feel right.

I would say save up a bit more if you can. Then SLI the GTX 970 and get the third monitor :)

Yeah, that´s my problem, I don't mind going to buy another screen, but I dunno if I will get the performance around 60 soild frames. Alternatively I could just go for 2 screen in a V shape and play with that, i personally don't play other games with multiple screens other than Elite.

I was considering it, will be saving up for a "grandé" upgrade on my rig. So let the saving commence!

Not sure about your question in regards to a triple monitor and the GTX 970, but I would like to make a suggestion for an alternate idea.

I suggest you save you money on all those monitors and get yourself an Oculus Rift. I have one and I play Elite and I can tell you that there aren't enough monitors that can fit on a desk to produce a better gaming experience than an Oculus Rift.

Yes, some judder is experienced in space stations, but it is indescribable how 'real' it all feels. (I run a GTX 970 with an AMD 8350)

Don't be discouraged by the nay-sayers, the resolution is 'good enough' to read text and you will be able to keep your settings high enough to have fun.
Also, I received my Rift in less than 6 weeks (ordered in September, arrived in October).

Anyway, good luck with your gaming setup, and I hope to see you out in the verse.

I would echo OutOnALimb's suggestion.

The consumer Oculus is likely to be 1440p+ resolution with 90Hz refresh rates- and out in months. The reviews of those playing on the Crescent Bay (oculus 3.0) build have been nothing short of astounded.

If you want to really feel like you are in your own ship... If you want to be agape in shock at the staggering (illusory) ENORMITY of a nearby star... If you want the freedom to watch as a ship flies past, behind, ok above, or below you by turning your head to watch it... If you want to FEEL LIKE YOU ARE TRULY IN SPACE...

Just wait 5-8 months. It's right around the corner. Treat yourself to another 970 if you've money to bur. and get your SLI with VR DIRECT roaring.

It surely will be worth the wait. If you still doubt it, go to ArsTechnica and read today's story on the Oculus with Elite.

The author of the article was amazed-- and his experience is with the DK2. How much moreso might YOU be when your seeing it all with considerably greater resolution?

Just wanna state my 2 cents:

Re: 970 for triple monitor.
At medium setting, I think the 970 stands a chance at 60fps for 3x1080p setup. I run an old Q6600 OC + GTX 460 OC on 1440p at max. settings (except AA) and the ED Beta experience is pretty smooth. I think the game is just well-optimzed for PC.

Re: Oculus Rift vs Surround
Even if the Rift doesn't offer as wide a field of vision as a triple-monitor setup, it'll still be superior for the sense of immersion and ability to look around in a natural manner.
