I would like to upgrade the memory in my laptop. Currently I have 4 gb and I would like to update to 8 gb.
What brand memory should I choose
What is the difference between CT51264BF186DJ vs CT51264BF160BJ

Solution
As mentioned earlier, Crucial memory CT51264BF160BJ is not compatible with the Elitebook 8450p (according to memory search at Crucial website).

Just clarifying that using individual modules (even using the same brand and with the same part number) there is still no guarantee that the modules will be compatible with each other. This is due to variations in module characteristics, as each module has its own unique characteristic. For two or more modules to work together (be compatible with each other) requires that the module characteristics be similar.

If wanting to use individual modules (not from the same kit), then be prepared to spend time and money trying different modules (same brand and same part number) until a compatible...
Firs, it is recommended that a dual channel kit (2 x 4 GB) be used to ensure module compatibility. Otherwise trying to match individual 4 GB modules may take a while in order to find two modules that are compatible with each other.

The Crucial memory quoted (CT51264BF186DJ and CT51264BF160BJ) are NOT compatible with the Elitebook 8540p according to Crucial memory search.

Compatible memory are shown below -

Crucial

Corsair

PNY

Thank you for the response.
I am not planning to mix different brands or types.
I am thinking of buying two CT51264BF160BJ 4 gb rams (8gb in total) and remove the old two 2gb ones

As mentioned earlier, a dual channel kit of 2 x 4 GB is recommended to be used instead of individual modules, as the modules within the kit are guaranteed to be compatible with each other. This could save a lot of time and money in the end.

Compatible memory from several memory manufacturers were quoted in the links above. Please have a look at the results at those links for suggested compatible memory for the Elitebook 8540p.

Repeating again that Crucial memory part number CT51264BF160BJ is NOT compatible with the Elitebook 8540p.
