I think every e-mail program offers a mode that turns off "threads" which is that abomination that groups e-mail replies together. Keeps it in simple chronological order. Using folders of course takes this a step further.

Sounds like his real plan is to obfuscate that you are using e-mail at all, thus trapping users in an otherwise open system. IE he sees e-mail as a free open-source competitor and is looking to co-op it.

Very similar to how phones completely hide file structure to the point that kids today don't understand what file explorer is and are totally reliant on the search button.
