You have to install Java first.

Get Java here:
http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp

That seems to be a problem, when I download java I get this message "This
instalation package could not be opened. verify that the package exists and
that you can access it, orcontact the application vendor to verify that this
is a valid windows installer package" I recently had to reformat the hard
drive and download srvice pack2 I am wondering if something went wrong and I
need to reinstall windows again? Thanks again to any and all that can help

There are many editions of Java. Read the instructions carefully. You need
to be sure that you are clicking on the correct link.

Sometimes a file that you download isn't properly transmitted. This isn't
your fault - it's just 'one of those things' that happens on a network. When
this happens, all you need to do is to download again.

Before you install software that you have downloaded, you should temporarily
turn off your antivirus software, as well as any other protective software
you have that prevents scripts from running. Otherwise, the software may not
install properly or at all. This means that you need to scan the software
for viruses before you install it. Don't forget to turn your antivirus
software on after the installation has completed.

Java can only be installed by an administrator.

How do I sign on to my pc at home as the administrator, so that I can install
Java? I've downloaded it but it won't install. It give me that long message
that xtechno gets. I'm trying to play games at sites that require Java. I do
have Microsoft VM but the rooms will not finish loading, so thought I would
try SunJava. Any ideas?

Well I have spent several days and nights and all I have done is gone from
bad to worse. It all started with SP2 ( or at least I think it did ) I do
know I picked up a virus that removed a lot of files and several programs I
was using. It also removed my modem and printer. It has taken over a week to
get it where it would reinstall the modem, but the printer is still dead. I
eventually reformated the hard drive and it has been all down hill from
there. Now it takes about 5 or 6 minutes for windows to load up. I think I'm
going to give up and just get another hard drive and start over. I'm no
computer guru but it does seem like I know just enough to really mess one up
lol. Thanks for all your help out there.

I feel your pain - and more. In my time I've made every mistake that you've
made, and many others that would never even occur to you. So listen to the
voice of experience:

1) Do not do anything to your computer until you understand exactly what you
are about to do. There is an enormous amount of information available. Take
advantage of it. I spent days reading about Service Pack 2 and hours
preparing my computer for the upgrade. When the time came to do the deed, I
was done in 21 minutes from beginning to end, and my PC works flawlessly.
Before I installed Java I read through the information on Sun's web site
twice, and then consulted the Internet for more information. Needless to
say, the installation was a breeze and Java works great.

Anybody who is willing to invest the time can be just as successful.

2) Learn the art of backing up. I can't stress this enough. With a recent
known-good backup of your system, you always have a way out of trouble. Two
weekends ago I had a major software install go south on me. Don't you hate
when that happens? So I restored the system partition from a backup image
and was back in business in literally minutes.

3) Protect your PC. There was no reason for you to have gotten that virus.
You can keep yourself free of viruses and spyware - if you invest the time
to learn how. Here's a good place to start:

"Protect Your PC"
www.microsoft.com/protect

You need to keep up with the latest threats by reading the enormous amount
of information on the Internet. A good resource for novices and
intermediates is PC World Online at www.pcworld.com.

Now, go forth and crash no more!

I'm back up and running again. Thanks Ted Z. Your words encoruage me to read
some more and I did. The one thing I did not find however was that the 12
guage I was temped to use on it was actually going to fix my problems. While
I'm not sure which thing it was that started me in the right direction, I am
sure that your words did cause me to reread and slow down on my clicking
finger ( amazing how such a small member of your body can cause such big
problems lol ) . as For the "what it's worth dept" people like me need people
like you out there helping. Thanks again Ted. One last thing, after
reinstalling Sp2 the computer runs great it even fixed the slow start up. Now
if I can just remember what all that important stuff was I use to have filed
away on here... hmmm lol
