I want to install outlook on my laptop but need to enable network id. it is greyed out so I cannot continue

Solution
To connect to your work email, unless they are running on a cloud service, you will likely need a VPN connection for it to work and you will need your account and server info added to the configuration. Your IT guy should know all this. Or you can just use the web interface to get to your work email.
If it's greyed out then you are on an account that does not have rights to change it, or you are on a domain and group policy disabled the changes.

Log on to an administrator level account and try this.

But the main issue here is that Outlook will install no matter what type of network you are on, so you may want to start your question at the beginning here since you seem to be trying to do something you don't have to, or there are more things you need to work out.

You have a copy of Outlook, and your laptop, what exactly happens when you try to install it? Is this your own laptop or something from work? If it's from work, you should have your IT department install the program.

Thanks for the response. Maybe I should give more background. first of all I'm really technically challenged when it comes to installing or removing anything on a laptop. I bought new laptop and also MS Office 365. I absolute hate the Mail version with 365 and wanted to actually uninstall 365. But then I saw that there is MS Outlook on the menu bar and this is where I wanted to add my work email.

so I'm going to use my personal laptop for doing work and therefor I need to add their domain, etc. there is therefore no administration user added to my laptop.
I did ask our IT guy to help but he could not determine the problem. we tried to add the exchange account on the company LAN

not sure if this information is helpful

I think your advise on the VPN is probably the reason we canno do it. I will ask our IT to check it out.

Really appreciate your help on this one!
