Currently under 100% load (SMT disabled) for 10+ hours I am at 63C. I feel there is room to squeeze some more performance. I dont particularly want to mess with manual overclocking as I dont really know what im doing and dont want to risk it learning. I have heard enabling PBO can spike to 800 watts which sounds bad and like it could potentially fry the chip. Is this something I should be worried about? I also heard it only activates if it senses the temperatures are okay. So unsure if there is a risk enabling it or not. Thanks!

CPU - 3990x
Motherboard- Asus Prime TRX40 Pro S
256 GB 3600 ram

Precision Boost Overdrive is run automatically by AMD's software. It uses many sensors on the chip, sometimes checking them up to 1000 times a second. These sensors are monitoring things like the watts the SoC is drawing, VRM current and temperatures, and the temp of the chip. In short, PBO has many protections in place to ensure the chip is running comfortably and safely. If you do get a large spike in wattage, worst comes to worst, your system will shut off if the power supply is overloaded. You will just have to be more careful when using the feature in the future. I have been using it for years with zero stability or hardware problems. I'm not running a Threadripper like you are, but the feature works pretty much the same across AMD's lineup. Hope this helped, take care.

I don't have PBO enabled on my 7950X. On a recent 4K video render in Topaz Video AI, the CPU was sitting at 89C for36 hours (under a Noctua NH-D15). I only have 64GB RAM (2 x 32GB).

What app are you running? Why do you have SMT disabled?

You might see a small improvement with PBO enabled, but if your app uses Open GL/CL, you'd probably be better off getting a faster GPU.
