Enlighening info I've just learned

Ever since I've known to overclock my setup, I've done it through the jumpers. I didn't like the BIOS, because if I messed up, I assumed I had to clear the CMOS just to put everything back into their defaults. But, glancing at the manual, I just learned something that just changed the way I overclock:

If your system crashes or hangs due to improper frequency settings, <b>power OFF your system and restart</b>. The system will start up in safe mode running at a DRAM-to-CPU frequency ration of 3:3 and a bus speed of 100MHz. You will then be led to BIOS setup to adjust the configurations.

I think it's so much better that I don't have to worry about cracking open my computer anymore to change some settings. This applies to the Asus A7V133 rev. 105 motherboard, but make sure you check your manual. Perhaps this can also apply. Now, if you've already known this, I know you must be laughing hysterically, fine. But, I just wanted to share this because some people might not have known this before (me being the example). If this has helped you, please reply. I would just like to know if I'm the only person who didn't know this. (Don't be shy either... )

Ah - but what you need to watch is that the A7V133 is not perfect at doing this. Many a time I have hard reset but it does not recover and gets very obstinate - even to the point of thinking something must be broken.

My old CUV4X does this faithfully every time I ask it, but often I need to open my case, switch between jumpered and jumperfree on the A7V133 before it comes back to life. That's with all BIOS I've tried including the latest.

Be warned - what you say is how it SHOULD work, but it often doesn't for me on a rev. 1004 board. Sometimes it does though, probably 80:20 good vs. pain in the ass.

Doggoneit...you just ruined my day! 😡

I'm kidding. I guess I am too optimistic. But, if it ever gets to that point when it doesn't recover, I'll probably go back to the jumpered way. Actually, my FSB is at 133, so I might as well go back to jumpered mode. It's not that much of a hassle to open up my case. But, I'm kind of thinking about ceasing my overclocking days. Right now, I'm just trying to see how fast I can go stable, with temps not mattering to me. But, as soon as I find a fast setup at decent temps, I'll probably go on a overclocking hiatus.

sorry! please note also that going back to jumpered does not always work first time, you sometimes need to try and boot each alternately a couple of times to recover. I cannot make any logic to the patter, so cannot offer you a shortcut...

Ah, well, I have seen the very same option on the Abit KT7 (and RAID), but in even an easier option. All you have to do, is if you find a bad FSB that doesn't work (your system hangs), then all you do is hold 'Insert' when you start-up and it will load with defaulted FSB, Multi, and RAM settings.

So when my system hangs, turn off my computer, hold Insert, then turn it back on and my system will loaded with it's defaults? Will it go to the BIOS and show me the settings or what?

nah, you still have to hit del to get to the BIOS. The settings will be default though.

Pete, guess what? Just this morning, when I restarted Windows, it wouldn't restart all the way. Then, when I jumpered the voltage, it worked fine. You were right. I didn't doubt you at all but you were right...LoL

I have a KT7 which as another poster noted has a failsafe startup as do the A7V133s. On both boards this does not always work on a cold boot. Before you crack open the system in frustration, disconnect it from power for 10 seconds. Reconnect and try failsafe startup. Always works on my KT7 and I heard it works on the A7V family.

Remember, a shutdown is not enough. You must disconnect the system from power.

the insert key works on lots of mobo, oem as well!

imagine my horror/laughter when my older brother (computer genius) told me he was removing the cpu to clear such problems!!!

My A7M266 does it as well, when the FSB doesn't work for some reason, it comes back working fine after I hit the reset button, back to default 100 MHz Front side bus. Just thought anyone who wants an A7M266 might like to know.
Its not the best board for overclocking because you can't change the multiplier, but if you want to overclock through the front side bus then it isn't all that bad.

Hmm, yeah I got the same mobo (A7V133), but I oc'd my tbird 1.2 to 1.6 just for fun (133*12) LOL. It never reset its settings,hell.. it didn't even post. I had to do it through the jumpers, although it's almost as easy I'd rather go through bios, I am still in jumper mode.
