Entire build won't work

Hi everyone. My current build is:

Generic case with one case fan
Biostar A880GU3 Motherboard
AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE w CoolerMaster EVO Hyper TX3 and Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste
ATI Radeon HD 5770
WD Caviar Green 2TB HDD
WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD
G.Skill Ripjaws X 4GB 1600mhz x2
Xenta Powerful & Stability System 600w PSU

So, let start this from the top.
Same Generic Case with one case fan
I had the same motherboard
An AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE w Stock Cooler and coolermaster Thermal paste
Kingston HyperX 1600mhz x2
Same Hard Drives
Same Graphics Card
Same PSU

I had this rig working for a week, and unexpectedly, while playing TF2, it shut off. And would power up, but wouldn't POST, and wouldn't display a thing. First thing I did was send the Motherboard back, it was tested and was sent back to me because they couldn't find a problem with it. Next thing i did was buy new RAM, the G.Skill ram shown above. No change, so I bought the Phenom II 965, the new heatsink/fan and the new thermal paste. I fitted it all properly, and no change at all. I've tested the PSU with a multimeter, all the voltages check out.

So at this point, I have no idea what to do.

I thought the new CPU would fix it because I thought the CPU burnt out due to my having the stock cpu cooler's fan set to the 'quiet' pre-set in the BIOS.

What could it be?

It's always just powered up the fans and LEDs and do nothing else when I power it on, no matter what I do. I have a POST speaker, I long for it to make a noise.

I would be pretty certain that the issue lies with your PSU as its very cheap and nasty, i just hope its only a voltage supply failure and that it hasnt blown and taken some of your components with it, the only way to test is to buy a decent branded PSU and try it, (antec, corsair, xfx, seasonic, silverstone etc etc).

Because thats what cheap PSUs do, as there made out of substandard components.

Find out how many AMps your 12v rail supplies then work out what your system draws at peak, i bet its more that your PSU can manage.

Yes as thats barely 350watts


Converting Amps to Watts

The conversion of Amps to Watts at fixed voltage is governed by the equation Watts = Amps x Volts

For example 29 amp x 12 volts = 348watts

PSU calc for your system means you need at least a

Minimum PSU Wattage: - 342 W

Recommended PSU Wattage: 400w

No matter what you are going to want to replace the PSU.
The PSU is the one part of a PC I will not skimp on.

The other parts just affect performance. The more money you spend the more performance.

With a low quality PSU you can take out the entire system in one fell swoop. That 29a 12 volt rail is terrible. This is what is called a liar label. They give you 600 watts with many watts on the 3v/5v rails where they are not needed.

Does Dedicated 12v rail mean that it can have as much amperage as the computer needs to get that advertised 500W? Or what

The 500 watts just means that if you add the 12v and 5v/3v rail you get 500 watts.
So your 12v rail has 29 amps or 348 watts. Meaning the other 5v/3v gets the other 150 watts.
You don't need the watts on the 5v... you need them on the 12 v. If your 5v had 50 watts it would be fine.
Dedicated just means you have an individual rail that is isolated from the rest. The PSUs advertised wattage is a result of the addition of the 12v rail and the 5v rail. Some manufacturers use multiple 12v rails to get the total wattage on the 12v side... So you'll have a 15 and a 14 amp rail to get to the 29 amps advertised.

The corsair you linked is a 34 Amp x 12V power supply. So 408 Watts are on the 12v Rail

So here you see the 12v rail has 408 watts the combined 3.3v/5v rail has 130 watts the -12v rail has 9.6 watts and the 5vsb rail has 15 watts...
Add them up and you get over 570 watts... This is why Corsair rules... you pay for a 500 watt PSU and get what other less honest manufacturers would call a 600 watt PSU...

You should be fine. The CX 500 do the trick.

I always go a bit overboard on the PSU. If it were my rig I'd upgrade to the Corsair CX 600.

My rig in my siggy could get by with the CX 500. But I have a 850 HX... So yes... I tend to go overboard...

It's more of a budget thing, I can't really spend that £10 more sadly. Also, how much could I sell on ebay an AMD Phenom II x4 955 BE used? I can't get a refund because it was given to me. And If it hasn't been fried I'd want to recoop a bit of money.
