Epson Inkjects not too reliable

I have owned 2 epson inkjets and one HP to date and I have come to the conclussion that epson printers are just too unreliable.

Any extended period (2 - 3 days) of no use requires of you to clean the head. Paper jams are more common and communication problems with the computer are more likely. Is this just me or do others agree with me?

P.S. I have nothing agains the wonderful print quality they provide

I just hated how my Stylus 600 used to clean the heads every few days or so... takes time, takes ink.
Got rid of that one now 😛

I have to agree, the prolonged screeching it performs after being switched off for a couple of days is very irritating. I believe it is 'charging' the print head rather than cleaning but the result is the same, it sure seems to waste ink.

My Stylus 600 is three years old and the print quality is superb, only on high-quality paper though.

A year or so back the paper feed mechanism failed, I took the think apart and found that a cog had popped off its shaft.

I refitted it but a day later the same thing happened.

Examination showed that it a sprung retaining mechanism which had worn. I couldn't figure out why it needed this mechanism so I superglued the cog back on.

Been fine ever since.

My cynical mind thinks it was designed to fail after a couple of years.

The most annoying thing was the fact I only use it for colour output. I used to be a hardware engineer for Oki and 'liberated' a couple of their mono LED printers. Very reliable, very nice.

So the Stylus is still with me, but when it comes to be replaced I think I'll get a HP.

what about other inkjet printers....... it cant be true that only HP makes good ones

I think it may well be true that HP make the best though.

Epson quality is good, especially at the budget end of the market. I would say that they are superior to HP. It's just that in my experience they have some reliability problems.

Canon too have good products, I don't have enough experience to give an opinion though.

Lexmark kit is just too cheap and nasty IMHO ;-)

I think HP is great in the laser field too :)

I work for an IBM business partner, and I we use IBM laser printers. They are nice print quality wise, but the drivers are just plain crap.

HP inkjet printers are good quality and reliable but i hate hp's printing language. it is possible to emulate postscript on epson printers which is a very nice quality.

The reason that that cog is sprung loaded and held on with a circlip is so that you can take it off and replace the printhead when it gets worn, I have had a Stylus 600 since they were new and it has never missed a beat or broken down, the ink used to charge itself is pretty minute, so I wouldent say that was enough to dismiss these printers, I wonder wether you guys are using genuine epson ink or cheap crap replacement stuff?

Everybodys entitled to my opinion

I have problems even with my barely used epson stylus 1200. So it cant be because of a bad head

Fair point garf.

However the Stylus 600 can be taken apart to replace the print head irrespective of the sprung loaded shaft. Besides, the engineering should prevent it popping off under normal use!

As to the minute amount of ink used, if you have a mono laser and only print in colour every few weeks, that minute amount amount sure adds up!

I suppose I should only switch the Epson on when I need it.

Hi all, i have to say that i've never used an epson printer [always used hp] but my uncle has used an epson 640 for about 2 years with no problem's even with his daughter printing off stuff all the time.
i currently use a hp deskjet 840c, but sometimes when i turn it on it'll start printing and it'll spit a page out with a real small smiley face in the corner.
Anyone else ever seen anythink like this?

You see, thats the problem... Epson printers behave as long as they are used regularly. But if you stop using them for a couple of days, first you get that ink charging thing and then for the next few printouts you get heavy banding. The only way for me to stop that is do some head cleaning one or two times before I start my printing.

I have Canon BJC 210SP and it's still working fine. Bought it in 1997. One thing amazes me is that they still sell original catridges! But I wonder how long that would last. Well, it's fine with me, once they're out of market it's time to get a new printer.

This site is cool.

Epson use “unique piezzo technology” which was invented by I.B.M (now Lexmark) and promptly abandoned by them in 1974 for being unreliable. Epson technology is unique, as Apple, H.P and I.B.M wouldn’t license the thermal inkjet process to them.

You are here for a good time not a long time
