Have an Epson XP-640 printer and I am trying to print 4x6 photos without any white borders in portrait mode. But no matter what I do, it will print a white border on the top and bottom of the photo. It's more than 1/2" of white on top and bottom. Borderless is turned on in settings. In landscape mode, it will fill the whole paper. How can I get it to fill the whole page while in portrait mode?

Printer says firmware is up to date. Tried with printer connected via wireless and usb with no difference. Tried changing the print settings like page margins, fit, paper size but nothing changes the white border. We are doing pics with Santa and used the same printer for more than a few years now and was able to print in portrait without the white border. Not sure why I can't now. Running Windows 11. The photos are stored on a laptop. Also tried on a desktop with same result. Now if I print a photo that is on my phone through google photos on laptop, it will only have a white border on the bottom of photo. When we do the santa pics, pics will be taken with an actual camera and using sd cards to put on computer.

What software is being used edit (if the photos are being edited) and print the photos?

- Print out the Epson's configuration report as a way to focus on and verify all current configuration settings.

- Go to Epson's website to verify that the firmware is up-to-date.

[Note: be sure that you are truly at Epson's website. Just because "Epson" may appear in the pathname that does not mean that the website is really Epson. Especially if looking for downloads of any sort: firmware, apps, or utilities/tools.]

- Check Epson's Forums and FAQ's for simliar questions, problems, or comments.,

If possible try to determine the last printer firmware update. A newer version may be buggy or corrupt.

An older firmware version may allow the printer to again print borderless.

Do you have a setting like this (timestamp) :

?
I did not see any setting like that. I do for printing labels on a cd but didn't see anything for paper.

I am using Windows photo app to open the pics. The pics are not being edited before trying to print.

Besides a test page, I did not see how to print a configuration report.

I did go to Epson's website and the only firmware it listed was a recovery mode version. Says to only use that if the printer displays recovery mode error. Current firmware version is NK07N7. How would I go about installing older firmware? Where do I get it from?

Checked the FAQ's and only found a place telling me how to turn borderless printing on, which I have already done that.

Set aside firmware for the time being.....

Is it possible to do some test prints with another photo app?

Even if on another computer and/or printer?

Objective being to narrow down to app, computer, printer driver, or the printer itself.
What app should I try? I have opening with paint, snipping tool and it was worse with both of them.

I have tried 2 other computers and same result using the Windows photo app. I don't have another printer to try, at least not one that is mine. Family might have a printer I could try, will have to ask around.

No particular app - just any that can be used to test.

Anyway; noted that you turned on borderless printing. However, appears to be a two-step/part requirement.

......

4. Select a borderless paper type as the Paper Type setting.
5. Select a borderless paper size as the Document Size setting.
6. Select the Borderlesscheckbox.
Note: You must select a compatible borderless paper type and size to print without borders. Check the borderless paper compatibility list in the product's User's Guide for details.
7. Click OK.

Also: When you selected Borderless printing and clicked OK (if that was done) did "Apply" remain grayed out?

I figured out what the issue was, at least I think. The pictures I was trying to print in portrait was taken in landscape mode. As soon as I try to print a pic taken in portrait mode, there are no borders. So in order to print in portrait mode without any borders, the pic has to be taken in portrait. Well I can open a landscape photo and rotate it and it will print without any borders but its in the wrong format. Seems like it's so simple I feel like a goof lol. Didn't realize this was the case unless there is something I am still missing. Should I be able to print a landscape photo in portrait mode without any borders?

Nicely done.

But do not feel like a "goof".

I think that it is reasonable that if you require borderless printing then selecting borderless printing should work regardless of or sans any manipulations etc. with respect to how the picture was taken and/or the desired printing mode.

And, even if there was some underlying reason for coordinating such things (as you discovered) then that should have been included as a configurable option somewhere.

Or at least been documented to inform the end users.

As manufacturers may view such things:

🙈🙉🙊

Thanks for the update.

I will mark the thread as solved. What you worked out is likely to help someone else.

That is what I was thinking too. I only seen one place to select borderless printing and it was checked. Been through all the settings several times.

I am still going to try a different printer and see what happens. I still wonder if rolling firmware back would help. But not sure where to get previous firmware versions from. There is only the newest one listed on Epson's site. Been doing some google searching and found some places that have previous firmware but one looks really old and just not sure what is legit and what is not.

Appreciate the help.
