EPU - unplugging the cable

I have an ASUS motherboard with the EPU power saving function. I am not using it anyway, so I started to wonder - do I need to plug in the 8pin cable that comes from the PSU directly into the EPU socket on the motherboard? Does it do something else, besides power saving (when turned on)?
I would rather ditch that cable altogether for better cable management...

You'll need the EPU connected as it provides power for the CPU otherwise it won't post.
