EQ 2 Performance with Athlon 64 FX?

Hello,

I have concluded that EQ2 is heavily CPU bound and wish to upgrade my system
to the fastest processor available. I was wondering if anyone could comment
on
the performance of EQ2 with the higher end Athlon FX processors.

My desire is to be able to play the game at High Quality settings, or at
least balanced. Of course, on the isle of refuge, we can set our settings
very high, but
we all soon realize that as we venture out, and start playing in more
advanced areas, the performance really takes a hit.

I am currently using a 3.06 P4 RDRAM based system I have had for two years
(except video card upgrades), and can only play in 1280X960 at
high performance settings for good frame-rates. Lowering my resolution to
1024X768 doesn't really make any difference to my system, and I still can't
play at balanced or above in places like Blackburrow or with large groups.

I would like to stay away from the faster P4's due to the extreme heat
issue.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I am thinking of keeping my Geforce 6800 Ultra AGP and using it in the
following system:

Athlon FX 55
MSI NEO2 platinum mainboard: Nforce 3 250 ultra chipset (AGP slot, not PCIX)
2GB Corsair XMS DDR400

My current system:

P4 3.06 533fsb
Asus P4T533-C mainboard
1.5GB 1066 RDRAM
Geforce 6800 Ultra (AGP)

BTW, I do not have a Geforce 6800 stuttering issue.

Personally I'm surprised the P4 can't run it but I suppose what an
acceptable FPS to one person isn't to another.

I've got a AMD 64 3400+ with a 6800GT and it runs fine at high quality.
I've switched of shadows since it really makes a difference performance
wise (and environment flare but that's for cosmetic issues.)

That video card is great. I am running on an Athlon 64 3500+ with the
BFG 6800 OC and can run at 1280 x 1024 in high just fine. Make sure
you get a motherboard with dual channel memory. I am running an Abit
AV8 and can also recommend the Asus A8V and MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum.

Good luck!

Make sure your FX is one of the new "Winchester" chips. They use a
90nm die rather than the older 130nm, and their power consumption (and
hence heat produced) is something like half that of the older ones.

My Athlon 2000 xp died on xmas day, so was replaced yesterday with new
mobo and cpu, an Athlon 3000 64.

So far, I can crank up the graphics quite a way before encountering
drops in framerate.

Unfortuntaley, the the event that killed my mobo and cpu also killed
one of my DIMMs, so i'm down to 512mb at the moment, which will cause
a few slowdowns on it's own.

Gryffon rides look a lot better, now I have my character detail
ramped up, and the gryffon looks good too, as I have my setting for 2
characters max detail. I've also turned on flora, to max disance, 25%
density (and love hove the grass bends when you run through it).

I have a GeForce 5900xt, by the way.
