EQ1 Patch Problem

Since the last patch a friend of mine has not been able to log into EQ. He
gets a "Time Out Error" message as soon as he hits login.

Any idea how to fix this?

If you mean "A timeout has occurred", usually when I've seen that it
means the computer has no connection to the internet. (Which happens
to my wife's computer far too often, it seems, especially when zoning.
Or when she exits to desktop and lets the computer sit idle overnight.)

So I'd say make sure you can connect somewhere else, e.g. open a
browser to Google News or something. (Not just Google.com; his
browser might have that page cached.)

Aye - that's the first thing he checked. He can do everything else -
including patch into eq2. He just can't patch into EQ1 anymore.

Any other ideas?

Copy all the .exe files from the EverQuest folder on a machine
where it's working (if necessary, you could mail him yours) in
case something smashed the patcher on his box.

Does he have a firewall that maintains a checksum table of all
applications that can access the net? After the patch the eqgame.exe or
something might have changed which will be detected by such a firewall.
Unless he confirms the change to the firewall it will block the access.
Maybe it is set up so it won't ask for any confirmations though.

I wouldn't know if this is the problem, but Zonealarm acts just like
this - it "knows" EQ has changed, and thus puts up a window asking
whether to allow EQ to access the net, but it pops up "under" EQ.
This is not a problem if you run EQ in "windowed" mode, as you can see
the Zonalarm prompt and tell it to allow net access, but if you
aren't, Zonealarm will sit there forever, blocking access, so to the
viewer it looks like EQ locks up.
