How do spells work in eq2? I've got a mage and the apprentice I and II are
confusing me. Also, it said I learned a new spell when I hit lvl 8, but all
the buttons at the bottom were filled up, so where did the spell go? Do I
have to buy any spells or do they all just get given to me when I hit
certain levels?

App I spells are acquired at certain points as you level.
App II spells can be purchased from vendors if this has not
changed since beta. App III spells are player made. (not
sure if they drop as well, never saw a single spell drop in
beta). App II's are more powerful than I's and so on. When
you scribe a II, it overwrites the I as will III's overwrite
II's.

If your button bar was full, then the spell dropped into
your spellbook. It may also have been placed on the second
bar, but of this I'm not sure.

It does drop into your knowledge book - the page depends upon whether it is
a spell or combat art (not sure if there's a third option).

You can rearrange your spell bars without losing your spells - they are safe
in the book.
I think if you right click on the spell toolbar, it gives you the option of
creating another hotbar.
I re-size the toolbar so I can fit three double-rowed boxes on my screen at
any one time. This way I can organise my spells into buff, combat and
other/trade.
