I have very poor internet speed, as I am 2.4 miles from the exchange on copper, and an old Belkin G router modem. I need to come into the 21st century. We are expecting cable later this year. Can I purchase an ADSL router modem to use now and then bypass the modem to use with cable later? Or do I buy a router only with a seperate modem, which I discard later? Advice woulod be appreciated.

Solution
Most of the DSL routers will not work with a cable modem since they don't have a WAN port or allow on of the LAN ports to be configured as a WAN port.

Personally I prefer separate modem and router.
