hello,

I have searched this form from this problem and i only get solutions for people trying to extract archive files. Which all say .. don't work.

I am using windows 8.1 and i need to copy 3.5 tb of files ( Rar archives , iso's and images ) from a sata installed 6tb drive to a usb 3.0 6 tb drive ( cannot copy the files to internal non usb 3.0 drives either ) . Some files and folders copy just fine. While others give the 0x80004005 error. With no solution and only the suggestion to look it up online.

Things i have tried already.

Search the forum via google ( every post i see talks about archive files and older version of windows )

tried seagate cloning software to try and clone the drive

take ownership of the folders and files and giving myself ( no idea why i didn't have this ) full admin rights.I uninstalled my anti virus ( malewarebtyes) and disabled the firewall

My system is

windows 8.1 enterprise 64 bit

256 SSD os drive

6 tb mass stoage drive

2 x 6tb usb 3.0 drives

Please help me , no one seems to have the answer to this problem

Solution
Try opening an administrator command prompt and running sfc /scannow . The two likely causes are system file corruption and aggressive anti-virus settings, so lets try to eliminate the first.
A bit of a noob question but do i need to run sfc /scannow from system32 or do i need to change the directory to the same as the source of of the files ? Since the files i need to copy are are a different drive than my OS files. Also , i have already uninstalled malwarebtyes and disabled windows defender.

Ran sfc /scannow and didn't get any errors. Disabled windows defender and uninstalled malewarebtes 🙁 still not working.

alright , making some headway. I right clicked folder and unchecked " read only " for the folder proprieties . I noticed as it taking read only off all the files it stopped on one. That one file gave the error that it was no longer there. So i stopped the operation and located the file. It was there but it showed "0" bytes file size. I tried to delete it and it gave me the same error about it no longer existing. And wouldn't let me delete it. So i got the idea to just archive it with the option to delete the files after the archiving was done. Sure enough the file was deleted and i was given a rar file of about 20mb's full family photos. No i can copy the whole folder . But this has me worried. I ran the error checking tool with sfc /scannow from admin command prompt and it gave no errors. I then ran the disk error checking took from right clicking on the same drive. It also gave no errors . Whats going on ? 0_O

Thats the thing , i had restarted many times before i posted to the forum. thinking that was the issue. The only recent times i did anything with the folder was earlier in the day. When i shortened the named of some file so they would meet the file name size limitation. I did this for file i had extracted from archives (because i was getting the file name size error when i first tried to copy the files. It went away after i shortened them and then i got this error )

But i had restarted many times since then.

heh i guess i got too happy. I got the error about file names being to long for two of the thousands of files to be moved. But i cannot for the life of me locate them. they don't show up in windows search.

found the files , took forever and some guessing since their are about 10 years of photos on here. Their file names where so long i couldn't even delete them with them looking me in the face. windows kept saying the name was to long . So i had to open winrar and selected delete files after archiving again. funny thing , i was able to shorten the file in the archive and decompress them again. And viola! they work! Photos of my grand father. Do know why it wouldn't even let me shorten the file name in windows 8.1 but this is getting annoying.
