Error 0xc00000e9; can't install windows vista

I decided to format my hard drive to get a fresh install of windows vista on my laptop and now whenever i put in the recovery disk it gives me an 0xc00000e9 error then to as a test I tried to install ubuntu and it worked but i would like to get back to using windows. Does anyone have any tips I already tried with another hard drive same error.

it sounds like the disk may be bad.

most recovery cd use ghost or another program that looks for partion on the laptop. I would use your other boot cd and make sure there one normal windows fat32 partion on the hard drive. (dont remove the hidden one on some laptops that where they put the restore info or drivers there.).
