Try repairing its installation with a bootable CD. You don't need to format; just repair the installation.

Hello and thanks for the prompt reply. I have tried your suggestion but no success. I run the recovery console also and using chkdsk from there it reports that I have unrecoverable problems. If I don't come up with an answer soon I am going to wipe the drive and reinstall winxp.
