I ran a spy ware software and deleted svchost.exe. Now when ever I change
profiles the message comes up that it can't find C:windows\svchost.exe. I
know that windows runs this file. Another site suggest that svchosts.exe is a
trojan. If the file that I deleted is not then how do I get it back and
reinstall it where it belongs? Note the s at the end of the latter svchost.

I believe that the easiest way to do this would be to run SFC /SCANNOW from
the Run prompt in XP.

Another way to do it is to extract it from your XP CD and copy it to where
it belongs. I'm afraid I don't know exactly how to do this.

Be aware of version inconsistencies - and don't replace anything. Save a
copy of the all files before replacing.

svchost.exe is an essential file for windows and you must have it for many
of the functions to run

SVCHOST.EXE is a valid Windows file, but it resides in Windows\System32. The copy that's trying to be run from Windows is likely the spyware/virus that you removed.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This program gives you an easily readable format of what's being automatically run (or trying to) at startup. Locate the entry that's trying to load C:\Windows\SVCHOST.EXE and use the included help for instructions on how to remove it.

A repair install will not fix this problem, is completely unnecessary
and a near-last resort for *some* OS problems. Locating and removing
registry entries or startup items that call c:\windows\svchost will. The
bonafide svchost file is in c:\windows\system32, not in c:\windows,
bonehead. Quit misleading people with your ignorance while hiding behind
your undeserved title.
