A user at my place of work is getting this error..

Error:

An unknown error has occurred.

It just happens randomly even when nothing is open.. Event viewer shows nothing and this error doesn't cause the user any problems other than making them click OK. I'm not real sure how to troubleshoot this problem since this is quite possibly the most vague error of all time. It seems as if there's no symptoms (other than the error box), and no description in the error or event viewer... No viruses or spyware on the computer.. I don't really know where to go with this one.. Any ideas?

Its on a Windows 2000 workstation using Win2k Server and Active Directory to manage users.

I love this error. I had for a long time this error printed out and hanging on my wall at work.. just as a joke.

Something somewhere is conflicting with another piece of software. If this error happens on loading into Windows, try uninstalling 1 program at a time and see if the error goes away permanently. It's tedious, but it's your fix.
I have this occur with programs like Office and Projectwise. Sometimes Vendor software is cheaply created and when installed it does something stupid and causes another service or program to close down and restart behind the scenes.

if it is on a workstation, just reinstall the windows, you'll be glad you did.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

Look in the Administrators Tools for the Event Viewer. Start with the System event log. If there is a ERROR message just before a reboot, right click on it and select properties. The information in the properties box will help you find the problem. If there is no ERROR message, then check out the info found in the properties box for the INFORMATION message that appears just after reboot. Look in all of the event logs: Applications, Security, and System. EXAMPLE: Here is the message I am getting in my System event log(so far, I do not know what to do with it):
