Esxi or Xen? hypervisor

I currently am playing around with esxi baremetal on a spare pc i have. However im limited with 60 day trials, and looking for a atlernative to mess around with and run a few servers. (VT-d).
I heard about xen, (already tried hyper v). Can xen be installed as baremetal? I dont like the idea of using software inside of a os, as i dont need to. Would anyone recommend xen over say hyper v for free / cheap experiments. Im also looking into vt-d support ect across my vms.

xen is a baremetal hypervisor. It is also free open source software, unlike hyperv (microsoft) or esxi (vmware).

Yea i looked further into xen. I found xenserver with xencentral (a gui remote tool - looks like vmware vsphere client application.). xencentral was kinda what i was looking for, a remote application gui with most of the goodie features and easy install of vms ect. Do you know of any other application / remote management applications like xencentral for xen / xenserver by chance?
