Hello,

is there a way to show the ethernet icon on the menu bar like the Airport icon?

There isn't an option to show in the menu bar, but you could always install 3rd-party apps/utilities to add monitors to the menu bar. There's iStat Menus: http://bjango.com/apps/istatmenus/ and MenuMeters: http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/menumeters/.
