Question Ethernet cable just installed, light comes on when connected to router but not detected when connected to computer ?

The ethernet cable was just installed from the main modem to a back room, and while there is a light that comes on upon connection to the router in said room there is no internet connection, and connecting to the computer results in no connection detected entirely. The cable is long (~50m) and made up of multiple cables wired together by the installer. Is this an issue with the length of the cable or something else entirely? Thanks in advance.

Good question, to be perfectly honest. My initial guess was that it was done in the absence of a longer cable? The final length came to ~50 yards.

Yes. It worked on his reader/testing machine, but there is no consistent internet connection. There are ~15s windows where it works at reduced speed, before disconnecting for 15-30s

I’m afraid I don’t know for certain, though I’m not sure what would be interfering with the cable. We’re thinking that this could be an issue with the range of the cable, would an Ethernet range extender be of any use here?

Did you test the direct to modem connection just to make sure the modem is working?

Ethernet cables can go 100 meters so you are only about 1/2 that.

The problem is you have to actually have real ethernet cable. There is a massive amount of fake cable on the market and the only reason they get away with selling it is it works at short distances.

So be very sure you are not using that flat cable which has wires that are too small. The other kind of fake cable is CCA cable, you want pure copper wires. This information is marked most times along with the markings eia/tia on quality cable.

If the wires were spliced how did they do that. There are special splice blocks used for ethernet cable. These will reduce the maximum distance a bit but if they just did something like twist the wires together with electrical wire nuts you have all kinds of problems.

If the wire is quality wire you should be able to get it to work. Almost all problems are related to the ends of the wire. How hard is it to just replace it. Does it run inside the walls.

Depends on what you are calling a ethernet range extender. There are some strange devices that use a form of DSL over copper wire but they are kinda small. You want to avoid anything that involves wifi.

Yeah, we’re looking at maybe replacing the cable with something new now. We should be able to replace it without major alterations, though it does run inside the wall.

Modem is working. We tried the port with a different wire and it worked fine. Thinking the wire is the problem in this scenario?
