Ethernet cable problems

Hello,
One of my Ethernet cable wasnt working so I bought a new one to try get it to work and its not working, I try open up the connection box and it says it is connected but it doesn't work at all,
Can anyone help?

Where is it connected? Router-----PC?

Connected via my home hub to my PC, the Ethernet cable works with my laptop and Xbox but not PC

Ok your pc that the cable does not work in, is it a new pc, or one that you have had for a while?

Also, please ellaberate on what you mean by the "conneciton box" and what messages you see. I assume you are talking about the Network Connection icon in the taskbar, but if i you ment something completley different then i could misguide you.

Ive had it for a few years, its the network connection box where it says how long your are connected for and what your connection speed is. Running on WinXp

Ok, do you mean you do not have a connection to the network, or you do not have a connection to the internet.

Go to start, run, type "cmd" and press enter, now that should bring up a command prompt dos window, type "ipconfig" and hit enter, you may have to scroll down a little bit but it should say IP Address, subnet mask, and default gateway. Please give me these values to help diagnose the issue.
