Ethernet Cable randomly stops working

My ethernet cable intermittently stops being picked up by my computer. At first, it would only happen when I open Steam. Now, it happens even when I'm just browsing the internet. It doesn't happen at home, only in the college dorms. I lived in a different room last year and it happened then too, only just when I opened Steam. It recognizes it again when I move the connection (on the wall, not on my computer) to a different port. If Steam is open that is only temporary. My motherboard is MSI H87-G43 LGA 1150 Intel H87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX High Performance CF Intel Motherboard. I am updated to the latest BiOS. The Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller drivers are up to date. I can't seem to find anyone with this specific issue being solved, could anyone help me please?

Seems the college ports play up, something you yourself cannot fix on your end

^^ I agree with the above. It's an issue with the ports in the dorm, not your pc or cable. Just to be sure, borrow someone else's cable and try it out on yours or just buy a new one. They are only a few bucks.

If it is the college ports, why does it not do the same for other people I know who use Steam?

It does not happen at home on the same pc/cable is why we blame school equipment
