so basically i have Ethernet ports in multiple rooms in the house but when i went to plug my PC into the port nothing happened. Downstairs in our study where the router and modem is located there is 6 Ethernet ports. Do i have to plug the modem or router into the wall? i have no idea how to run Ethernet through our house

It is not magic it works the same as if you ran a long cable over the floor between your PC and the router.

The hard part is figuring out which wall port behind the router corresponds with the each room. If someone was smart they would have marked them when they were installed. You can of course just hook cable between the router and the wall port on all of them. You will likely have to buy a small switch to increase the number of lan ports on your router.

Yes your incoming connection from your ISP should be connected to the WAN port, then you need to patch the 6 outlets into the LAN ports, if you dont have enough LAN ports on the router just patch the ones you need or buy a small 4 port switch. ISP----MODEM-----ROUTER/SWITCH---PATCH PANEL----INTERNAL WIRING------HOST MACHINES.

If i wanted to test it would i have to plug an ethernet cable into the router than into my pc and test each port?

The best way would be to plug the PC into some wall port in some room. Then go to the router and try testing a cable in the ports 1 by 1 until you get lights.

Lucky you only have 6 ports would take a while if you had lots more.

Be aware sometime the ports are not wired correctly for ethernet. Sometimes they were used for phones especially if the house is older. It is getting to the point that smaller children do not even know what a old style telephone even is.
