Hi All
Am in the process of applying for Predator DSL service in place of my dialup
service. One of the questions that is asked is "Does your computer have a
10/100 Ethernet card?"
I can't answer that question because I really don't know. I checked for
this info on the computer but can't find any info referring to an Ethernet
card. Appreciate any helpful info finding the answer.
Many thanks

Physically examine the back of the PC. You'll have either:
1. A built-in Ethernet port near the Serial & Parallel ports
2. In the PCI slots, you'll see an Ethernet socket with one or
more small LEDs.
If neither exists, then your PC doesn't have Ethernet capability.
Ethernet sockets look similar to RJ Phone sockets, but larger

Ethernet adapters are usually referred to as a NIC or network adapter.
As I remember, the Inspiron would be a laptop.
According to the Dell website for the Inspiron 4000, the NIC was optional.
Do you have one listed in device manager?
If not, you can get one that fits into a USB adapter for around $30 at best
Buy, Staples, Circuit City, etc.
I have a couple that are no bigger than a USB Jump Drive.

Good evening NotMe
Thank you for your speedy and most generously detailed response.
I followed your instructions to Device Manager and found the following
hidden folders under Network Adapters.
1. Direct Parallel
2. Infared port
3. Ras async adapter
4. Wan miniport (ip)
5. Wan miniport (ip) packet scheduler miniport
6. Wam miniport (L2TP)
7. Wan miniport (PPPOE)
8. Wan miniport (PPTP)
Would any of the above items possibly be the item I'm searching for?
If not, the $30 investment is easy.
Thanks again for taking the time and trouble responding.

Do you have a Network Adapter listed under Network Adapters?

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general (More info?)

It looks like you do NOT have an Ethernet adapter onboard.
My systems show Linksys/3Com/NetGear (or whoever the maker is) 10/100 PCI
Network Controller.
I don't necessarily recommend one brand over another, but look at the
adapters on this page for a start.
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c%3DL_Product_C1%26cid%3D1118334622279&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper
I have had good luck with my Linksys stuff.
As a tech, I have also setup many other brands of wired/wireless networks.
I haven't found that 1 is that much better to only consider that brand.
